Summer Program Coordinator- Carstairs Public Library

May 6-August 23 2025; 37.5 hours/week

Salary: $17/hour

Application Deadline: March 22nd 2025

We need an enthusiastic and creative student to join our team this summer to run our Summer Reading Club 2025. We want to bring the love of reading to our whole community this summer and help kids earn prizes for reading! Our program is based around STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) concepts and we want to ignite a passion for lifelong learning in children. You will be running a day camp 4 days a week for ages 5-14 . In addition, you will oversee a summer long summer reading challenge where kids and teens win prizes for reaching their reading goals.

About You:
We are seeking a post-secondary student who plans to return to full time studies in fall for the position of Summer Programmer for Carstairs Public Library. You are energetic, innovative, self-directed and enjoy spending time with children. The ideal candidate will be studying in the fields of Education or Library Sciences but we are open to all fields of study. Experience working with children would be helpful since you'll be working with children of all ages.
You will need to be comfortable using a computer for word processing, data collection, publicity and social media posts, and communication. You need to speak, write and read fluently in English. Other language skills would be an asset but are not required.
The position requires you to work with children so you will need a criminal record check with vulnerable sector check if you are the successful applicant.
You will need to have a high school diploma; having a Driver’s License and First Aid certification are nice but not required.
This position requires some moderate physical lifting and movement, the children will keep you on your toes.

There is a strong rural farming connection in town as well. Carstairs Public Library https://carstairspublic.prl.ab.ca/ has been a part of the community for over 50 years and provides a wide range of programs and services. Our small but mighty team is passionate about connecting to our community, providing innovative and engaging programs and meeting the needs of our many patrons.

Examples of Jobs our volunteers do:
  • Board Member - Library board members act as governors for a library, setting the direction and overseeing operations  without getting into the day-to-day management. They set policies, decide on strategic plans, set budgets, help fundraise , and advocate for the library.

  • Shelving Helper - Help out once a week by shelving books, helping dust and straighten shelving units and other tasks.

  • Seed Library Organizer - seasonally we need some help in the Winter to repackage and organized donated seeds to replenish the seed library for it's early spring launch.

  • Friends of the Library - Our Friends of the Library are a non-profit charity organization that raises funds for the library.  They are always looking for volunteers to help with board positions, book sales, book donation organizing, and maintaining the little free libraries around town.  For more information on the Friends visit the donate page or email them directly at friendsofthelibrary@gmail.com

We will do our best to match you with a job you're interested in when it becomes available. Thank you for your interest!
